    Sunset Barn and Sky

Since I got drenched by unexpected rain to get this ( I mean who would expect rain when standing outside under a thunderstorm?) I feel obligated to process and post the image.

    Sunset Barn and Sky

Since I was sodden anyway I elected to walk through thigh high wet grass to get behind the building for this angle. I could not get any more wet anyway.

Hi Trevor . The second image looks very nice, so I think it was worth getting wet The barn looks very tilted, is it lens distortion or is it really tilted so much ?

Lens distortion. The barn is actually quite solid and straight I left it as is because a lot of these old buildings have various degrees of collapse so it is not out of character.

Love both pictures. I'm not afraid of getting wet, but I'm terrified of getting my (relatively cheap) camera wet.

The nikon D700 is well sealed, but I took it off the tripod and stuck it under my jacket (mainly worn to keep the mosquitoes from eating me) when it became obvious that the rain was going to graduate from a sprinkle to a downpour. The lenses in my belt/pouch system I left in the pouches as I knew they would be fine and I could dry out the slight external dampness later. I have rain covers but i suspect taking removing them from the pouches to put them on would result in more rain on the lenses than toughing it out for five minutes.

    Nice set, great lighting.

Two great images, funny though that in #1 I want to see it a bit darker, maybe pull the mid-tones down a bit and yet conversely in #2 I want to see the opposite, lighten up the building a bit for more detail.

Perhaps it's just me (and likely Izzie) but I see the most charming, earnest expression on the house in #1.

Is that a rainbow in #1? If it is it's the oddest one I've ever seen as it appears to be just pink (and there appears to be another, parallel to its left).

I think what mostly throws me off of #2 is the distortion, it looks less like it's about to collapse and more like it's about to take off on a sprint.

I'll never tire of your images of the old barns. These two photos are good examples of why I'll never tire of them.

I'm in love with image #1. What a great scene and well captured! I also like #2 and the drama of it but, like Jack P, it's a tad dark for my taste. Fine line to maintain the drama yet get a bit more detail there so I could be wrong!

I did as you suggested I dropped the midtones on the first and will let it stew for a bit before making the final decision. Initially, I think your instinct is right. I had dropped them a bit in processing but perhaps a bit more is needed.

The rainbow is what is called a firebow. Not uncommon on the prairie and is due to the very red light from setting sun The colour is missing most of the rest of the spectrum.

I have tried to correct the distortion, failed miserably. I will have to live with it. I could not get far back or higher as i would have been in the trees.

Which is why I got even more soaked to try for it. Worth the mild discomfort.

This, and the accompanying house, are in a spot where they only get decent light for a few weeks around the summer solstice. Tucked in a niche in the aspen trees. I think they were built by ancient druid farmers for esoteric rites at the solstice when the setting sun enters the windows.

I think I may be able to pull more but the noise and pixelation is more than I am comfortable with. I wrecked the first attempt at processing trying correct the perspective and returned all settings to original I may go back to it again and start over

That would make a fascinating feature article with photos and narrative in a local newspaper or magazine.

Two nice shots Trevor but the Drama in the second is just wonderful. There is a temptation to perhaps lift the shadows but what ever you do don't destroy that touch of mystery.
