    The Helvetia

This is the remains of a shipwreck called 'The Helvetia' from the 19th century, it was caught in a storm and the captain and crew dropped anchor and abandoned ship.

The carcass seen here is made from oak, and sits on Rhossili Bay and can only be seen at low tide.

Matt, I love your colours. I wonder about the colours of the wispy clouds, they seem to contrast a tad too much from the ones on the horizon. That is only my opinion.
    Cheers Ole

That's a great composition Matt and nicely balanced processing. Not sure about the colour of the sky if I'm honest but that's just personal taste. Good work.

John I did slightly amend the colour of the orange sky, it was slightly more yellow SOOC. But as you say its down to personal taste

Thanks Binnur, I've been trying to get this shot for a while. The location is about 25 miles from my house and I had to time the tide and sunset just right.

I love shipwrecks, but to be perfectly honest, they are often in better shape when they are under water and protected from the storms and elements up top. Being backlit, the textures are hidden, which is really unfortunate as those details of 19th century shipbuilding are quite interesting.

The sky is exactly what I would have expected in this kind of shot.

If you get a chance, these old wrecks can look wonderful on stormy, overcast days. You'd find your usual techniques would have to be modified to capture them in those conditions.

I have got a HDR version which shows more of the detail in the wood, but I preferred this version in the end. I'll post it later if I get a chance though.

Definitely gonna get back down there and shoot in some stormy conditions (shouldn't have to wait long with the weather we've been having)

This is a shipwreck image I did years ago. This shot was taken on the western side of Graham Island (which is off the west coast of Canada; it's a part of the world that is often overcast and stormy). I just loved the textures in the wood and the red-brown rust stains from the nails in the wreck. The diffuse light shows the textures really nicely.

    The Helvetia

This should give you an idea where I am coming from with my comments.

That is a beautiful image....there are many elements to add interest like the pair walking, the flock of birds, the gorgeous colors, all in addition to the main subject; they all together make an awesome image

What a beautiful lighting condition -- the composition is superb here, Matt. Gotta love those colours!!! On another note, I like the image of Manfred very much too just that he has other ideas which is worth exploring too...I will remember this post. Thank you.

Matt that is an absolute corker of a shot, brilliant timing and great composition. I am truly envious (but not jealous!) of your location and your skill.

More praise from me Matt - lovely shot. I can see that Manfred has some good ideas for taking the image in a different direction but its for another day and another picture. This is a great shot.
