The Helvetia

This is the remains of a shipwreck called 'The Helvetia' from the 19th century, it was caught in a storm and the captain and crew dropped anchor and abandoned ship.

The carcass seen here is made from oak, and sits on Rhossili Bay and can only be seen at low tide.

Matt, I love your colours. I wonder about the colours of the wispy clouds, they seem to contrast a tad too much from the ones on the horizon. That is only my opinion.

John I did slightly amend the colour of the orange sky, it was slightly more yellow SOOC. But as you say its down to personal taste

Thanks Binnur, I've been trying to get this shot for a while. The location is about 25 miles from my house and I had to time the tide and sunset just right.

I love shipwrecks, but to be perfectly honest, they are often in better shape when they are under water and protected from the storms and elements up top. Being backlit, the textures are hidden, which is really unfortunate as those details of 19th century shipbuilding are quite interesting.

The sky is exactly what I would have expected in this kind of shot.

If you get a chance, these old wrecks can look wonderful on stormy, overcast days. You'd find your usual techniques would have to be modified to capture them in those conditions.

This shot was taken on the western side of Graham Island (which is off the west coast of Canada; it's a part of the world that is often overcast and stormy). I just loved the textures in the wood and the red-brown rust stains from the nails in the wreck. The diffuse light shows the textures really nicely.



This should give you an idea where I am coming from with my comments.

More praise from me Matt - lovely shot. I can see that Manfred has some good ideas for taking the image in a different direction but its for another day and another picture. This is a great shot.
