Mary... or Lucy... either is fine with me. ;)

White Balance at Dusk at the Beach?

I'm having tough time with beach photos... I didn't take this photo, but it'll work for the help I need. Almost always the white balance is set at auto and I adjust it in LR. If I sample a whiter portion the color was all funky, ditto with darker. I was looking at what LR was doing when clicking through the preset settings. It seems that it was using the sand for the sample?

I generally set my WB dropper to the second brightest thing in the scene...I don't like using pure white and in many cases will opt for whatever looks closest to a 12% gray.

Who's the nice dog with the lady?

Willie or Jiro is fine by me.

Normally, shots taken at dusk or sunset have this orangey tint on them so I think your shot looks just fine, Mary. Unless you really want to take out the orange tint then you can also do it inside lightroom with ease.

That's Lucy. So... what would you choose in that particular photo as the WB sample?

That was very sweet, but not helpful.

I'm simply eyeballing the white adjustment, Mary. Try setting the Temp to -15 and the tint to +8 on the white balance manual adjustment in lightroom. You might probably want to try converting this shot to b&w. The way I see it, it looks great on that, too.

Nothing but setting the WB to her teeth...such a pretty smile shouldn't go to waste...
