    Butterfly's Defensive Face

    Another early butterfly, a Peacock (Inachis io).

    The large 'eye' markings are to deter attack from the rear and I think I have managed to capture an angle which would frighten most predators.

    The background was a bit of a problem so I did what I could with it; but I may return to this image another day.

    Yes, Elise, in some ways this reminds me of those scary masks that are worn by some African dancers.

    Admittedly, that view of a butterfly's bum isn't very flattering to the insect; but I have loads of photos from the commoner angles and wanted something different.
