Thread: Grain of Salt on Blue Staffordshire!

Grain of Salt on Blue Staffordshire!

I'm working on a blog post of "words of wisdom". (i.e. "Those who can't laugh at themselves, leave the job to others, etc.") Suddenly, I had this urge to photograph a grain of salt. Am I stark raving mad?

I'd just like to add that these were all shot at f29 and that this little grain of salt was really hard to get a good focus on!

I can certainly work on them, again, tomorrow.

I think I would have shot it on a less confusing background...black comes to mind.

    mmmmmmEEEEEnn and their black backgrounds!

Don't mind me.... I'm spiking a fever again and can't go to the Doctor until tomorrow. (Everyone's digging through two feet of snow, still.) Maybe, i should just go back to bed, now! Katy gets herself in trouble when she gets "punchy".

    Poll being set up!

Why not photograph a grain of salt? It's a pretty object. I'm not sure it necessarily needs black, but it does need careful thought, as the grain in its own right can be pretty, but it isn't going to carry an image on its own. So what's around it has to make a significant contribution, I would have thought.

I cropped (and straightened) the first one a little. Maybe, having less background and clearer/larger subject will help. In this instance, I mean.

The last one, in my original set - the grain just isn't clear enough - doesn't stand out enough - but I do like the pattern on the plate.

The last iteration is much better. How about positioning it on the 3rds? Hope you get well soon, Katy.

    Now Katy,

If you had lied and said 'uncut diamond' I am not sure anyone would have noticed. So I would Google diamond shots and see what they use for backgrounds.

I like the blue bg Katy - black is so boring and yesterday.

This is just to isolate the one that I edited up above. The input was good. I needed to not let the grain get lost on that huge background. (Here's a link to it larger - I, at least, am really pleased with how it turned out.)

I did crop it down a fair bit, though, and was wondering if that's kosher (oh, hahaha! get it?). I did originally use ISO100 and used the uber clear 60mm lens - could that make a difference? I guess, really, though, that it's only for the internet so it doesn't really matter that much? (I'm sure that this question has gone around before.)

Also, Jiro, I had wondered about putting it on the third, already, too. It just didn't quite look right. I think that I should have angled the grain more to make it work.

Kit, your garlic soup made me think of this:

    "In January it's so nice
While slipping on the sliding ice
To sip hot chicken soup with rice
    Sipping once, sipping twice
    Sipping chicken soup with rice"

I think that all this time, it's been strep throat, though! edit: nope! Dr. was wrong just a super mean ol' cold!!! phew.
