Black on Black

Continuing to experiment with vases and dried grasses, this shot has a black vase, black grass against a black background. I feel this one works better than my previous posting.

Key light comes from the camera left side with a small, beauty dish with a grid to manage light spill. Fill light is largely reflected light from the beauty dish hitting a small soft box and bouncing back. I used very low power on the softbox for the fill.

This is another very nice shot. I like it better than your white on black which seems to float in mid air. I might consider burning slightly the stem of the grass.

Agreed on both counts. All of these images were me experimenting with lighting to see which approaches could work. There is a shadow on the camera left side on the black on black image, but there isn't enough separation in the image that I uploaded. I need to get a bit more light on the horizontal surface and a bit less on the vertical part of the black seamless paper.

With the second image, I agree, I need to burn down the stalk a bit so that it doesn't draw the eye as much.

I did exactly that after I made this post.
