    Re: A few macro

    Just a few notes, Les.

The first one is a Beautiful Demoiselle. It looks like a male but they normally have dark wings while yours is rather brownish. So I suspect this one has recently emerged and the wings haven't fully darkened yet.

The second is a Scorpion Fly but going further is tricky and you need to see some fine detail on the tip of the scorpion like tail. This can be difficult to achieve because you need to get your camera angle exactly correct without scaring away the fly. I have been twisting myself around today while attempting to get the angles. It looks as though my flies will all be Panorpa communis. I will post an example on my Project 52 thread when I have done the editing. Females cannot be identified without microscopic examination.

The beetle was previously called a Red-headed Cardinal Beetle but they have recently been renamed Common Cardinals.

Your fly is one of the Flesh Flies but they are impossible to accurately identify from photos and very difficult even with a microscope. Sarcophaga carnaria is the commonest species.
