I have been reading this conversation since the OP.

Typically, there's lots of good information.

Dan wrote on a thread here, a while ago, (my paraphrase) "I agree with just about all you write here, but this time I don't"

I took that as a monumental and multifaceted compliment.

I hope that this returns the same respect I hold for what Dan writes -

    Hi Dan.

I reckon that's part of it.

In addition to 'what you shoot' the choice of gear for travel depends on two other key factors:

    > Where you are travelling

    > How (by what method) you are travelling

    Hi Dan.

Indeed, I entirely agree and should have included those criteria. The last is particularly important for me. When traveling by car, I don't care much about weight; I just throw everything in the trunk (or boot, as many of you would say). That's sometimes more than 22 pounds (10 kg). What I had in mind when posting is traveling on foot, whether it be hiking in the woods or exploring a new city. The two images I posted were from the latter: one from Bergen and the other from Berlin. The nice thing about the Lumix is that while it's too big for a shirt pocket, it fits into a fanny pack or a large coat pocket. So when tramping around a new city, I just stow it and ignore it until I need it. It's no bother to carry it for 8 or 10 hours.

Here's an intermediate case. My wife and I were walking through a botanical garden in the Berkshires (Massachusetts, not England). This didn't entail walking far, but I had my FF Canon and a spare lens or two on my back and shoulder the whole time. I ended up with one shot I kept:

Thinking of downsizing for travel. Any suggestions?

But at this age, I found carrying the stuff the whole time, on a hot day, a bit of a nuisance. By chance, when I was looking at that shed, a friend of my wife's chanced on us. She was carrying an Olympus MFT. I was envious.
