we have a blue Kingfisher up here at 400m ASL. But I need a longer lens to get a shot anywhere near to as good as yours

These were taken at 400mm on the full frame camera Brian and a 300mm on your crop frame would give you 450mm equivalent.

They are significant crops, here's the un-cropped original of No 1.



I'll put my 300mm Tamron on the crop frame D300 and take some from exactly the same position to see what IQ is achievable.
