Was over my local park at the weekend,

gathering conkers with the little'un and trying to get some Autumn colours.

There where lots of other photographer over there and every one of them had a longers lens than me, boy did i feel inadequate.

    Well, yes, but ..........

A long lens is good if you know what to do with it.

Sure, a long lens opens up opportunities that might not otherwise be there. But, a long lens is no good if it's only some sort of status symbol and the user doesn't really know how to get the best out of it.

The sense of adequacy comes from the quality of the images that you produce, irrespective of the size of glass on the front. A snapshot taken with a 200+ mm lens is still a snapshot.
