A Passing Thought . . .

As I was checking today's/tomorrow's weather, I noted the precision by which I could pick the exact right moment for some external activity without setting foot outside or even looking out of a window!



I correlate this to setting the Panasonic to IA mode and then pointing and shooting.

In earlier times, the home owner might have actually gone outside, looked at his barometer, wet and dry bulbs, rain gauge, wind speed and direction thingy - and come to some conclusion as to whether tomorrow's picnic is on or off. That might correlate with shooting with an AE-1.

Going further back in time, ye olde farmer might have raised a wetted finger, looked at the clouds, the redness of the morning sky and felt his bones and the degree of droop of a horse-hair. Which might correlate with the days of no metering at all, internal or external, and the use of a Hunter & Driffield Actinograph:

In one sense, perhaps, but I think it's a point well worth making, for there will be many people who read CiC now and in the future who would not think of this.

Our Met Office, which is a UK government agency, has an excellent website and it is on my favourites list. I consult it all the time when deciding upon going out for shoots. Alongside it, because we are never far from the coast in Scotland, I have a site with tide tables. Those two are invaluable aids to the landscape (and I'd think the wildlife) photographer.

That's a great little slide rule exposure meter Ted. Does it work on spot metering or matrix?

I just noticed that the curves are for a latitude of 52.3 degs North, but the City of London is quite a bit South of there . . .
