    Puppies are growing...

These four little guys are growing really fast. Rita is a great mom and keeps her puppies spiffy clean. It's really easier for us when the mom takes good care of the puppies. We have had some moms who don't have the faintest idea of how to care for their puppies...

The major activities of these puppies are still eating and sleeping...

They are two days short of three weeks old.

Wow. They are already so big next to mom. A lot of people think animals are automatically "good" mothers. But it ain't so. Either with pets or in the wild.

    Emergency....

We just got an emergency phone call that this puppy was in a Los Angeles shelter after being kicked in the face. Her jaw appears to be broken.

    Puppies are growing...

She is on her way down to us and our orthopedic vet is standing by.

I'D LOVE TO KICK THE PERSON WHO DID THAT TO THIS LITTLE DOG

Happy and sad news at the same time. Poor pup. I'm sure you'll get her taken care of, Richard.

I never understand how people can inflict such cruelty on any animal, that poor dog.

    Re: Emergency....

Our orthopedic vet states that surgery cannot be done. He has put the puppies jaw into sort of a cast and we will be feeding the pup through a syringe. That will be for about six weeks with cast changes every five to seven days. The poor puppy is in a lot of pain but we are administering two types of pain meds and an antibiotic. Luckily, young puppies (as well as young children) recover quicker from a fracture or broken bone than adult dogs or older humans.

That was a shelter picture, done with a cell phone that I posted. I will shoot an image of the puppy tomorrow but, want to leave him alone as much as possible tonight so he can begin his healing process...

We fed our black kitty this way for several weeks when she was anemic and too weak to eat.

It doesn't do any good wishing badness upon the person who inflicted that on this little dog but, sometimes things have a way of coming around.

By the way the killer of "Cecil, the Lion" fell off a cliff to his death while hunting on another trip in Africa. I wonder if anyone will stuff him as a trophy

Aperson that would do that to a puppy would likely do the same to a small child and possibly a wife. I have seen the type.

Pitiful, Richard. Hope the little guy does OK. Luckily dogs, particularly young ones, are amazingly resilient. I couldn't do what you folks do there. I'd run out of room.

That's why we built our home with rubber walls so we can always squeeze in a few more dogs

We think that they might be terriers...

We didn't know what breed the father of Rita's puppies might be. But it looks like they are neither Chihuahua or Pit Bull mixes. The dad might have been a terrier of some type...

    Their First Solid Meal

Rita has been doing a great job feeding her puppies. This is a hallmark day! They are now transitioning to solid food. We grind up kibble in a food processor and make a gruel with warm water. The puppies are lapping it up.

    Puppies are growing...

Of course, their table manners are not great. They tend to walk through their food and spread it all over. We will change the pad every time they are fed. The puppies also need to be cleaned after every meal because they just dive into the food. However, we have found that the puppies transition better, at the start, eating from a low saucer than they would eating from a deeper dish.
