Dusk at the Gannet Colony

The sun sets on one of the islands and the beach as surfers and sand-walkers enjoy the remains of the day.



Well, was hoping to photograph the spectacular descent of the sun over the horizon behind the Muriwai Gannet colony, but my partner was technically challenged with the garden hose fittings, so I was late as I drove the 35km to the site, watching the sun sink lower and lower and expecting to just see darkness upon arrival. So these three photos were were super fast snapshots before the lights went out... Now I know when I have to be there to see the whole thing.

Thanks Dan. Well, I arrived as the main body of 3-4 photographers were leaving. Still, I shared the spot with one other die-hard using a Nikon bridge camera on a tripod, plus a young chap trying to seduce the hot blond he was with (both had cell phones). That said, it was a Sunday evening, and the weather had deteriorated but that is what I wanted for the clouds.

Nicely done, Trev. Were there many people about? Our B/B host said it can be a popular place at sunset.

Hi Nandakumar, thanks for your comment! Actually the horizon IS level (I hate out of kilter horizons myself and checked it) what you may be confused by is a bank of cloud and some light playing on the left side which LOOKS like the horizon.

Our young suitor was 'helping' her to take photos with her phone by standing close behind and holding her arms "to steady them'. She didn't seem to mind much at all. Ah, what it's like to be young...

When I shot that I was really in a hurry, taking it hand held at 300mm, 1/125 sec, I didn't expect it to come out actually!

I like this one best. IMO it incorporates the unique aspect of the location better than the others. Nicely done.

I agree Dan. It makes the most sense for those who have been there. I hope to go back a bit earlier and get the sun setting with more light.

The shots were all taken with Canon 60Ds and wider angle shots using the excellent Canon 15-85mm IS EF-S USM lens.

Don't forget to look around. I have to think that the view south could be awesome with the right amount of cloud lit by a sunset.

Absolutely, and in both directions. The sea mist from the surf can make some really interesting plays of light as the sun goes down, so I shall be looking to extract as much as I can from the time and the locations - especially having driven 70km round trip to see them!

Don't forget to look around. I have to think that the view south could be awesome with the right amount of cloud lit by a sunset.
