    Moonset at Mono

I hope I'm not boring people with these images from my trip to Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra. If you are bored, just pass on by and ignore them.

I loved the landscape east of the Sierra. Loved it because it is so different than my homeland. The incredible scent of miles and miles of Sage bushes will, I think, remain with me forever. The hard, harsh desert-like landscape was, to my eyes, awesome.

The moon was kind to me on my trip, showing up in lots of very photogenic places. On September 22nd it set just over an escarpment close to Mono Lake. Luckily I was there to capture it.

Your assessment and critique will always be welcomed.

On the contrary, I'm sure I have been missing some (compared to what I have seen on FB).

Any chance of a "Master" thread with links to all the individual ones?

Donald, did you adjust your camera's time stamp to US Pacific time or did you leave it set to Scotland?

I forgot to change it when I arrived and it was several days after I arrived that I remembered to do so. However, the correct time is shown on the EXIF data for this image. Captured just after noon.

Thanks for that! Otherwise some of you previous Yosemite image processing could be construed as extreme

    Re: Moonset at Mono

I have to admit to checking the EXIF to determine if the shadows were caused by the sun or the moon.

I'm afraid I can't think of anything remotely helpful to say; it is what it is - and the composition works, the exposure is good, but it really doesn't look square!

    Cheers, Dave

Very nice Donald. How far down 395 did you travel? I think I recall that you made it at least as far South as Mammoth Lakes. The Eastern Escarpment is truly a wondrous sight to see.

Furthest south I got was Bishop. I then went up 168 to North & South Lakes.

Great shot for that time of day!
Too bad you couldn't have worked the lake into the shot too.

It looks like a desert because it is one. Most of the rain falls on the other side of the hills.

The so-called classic photo would probably display either a crescent moon or a full moon. I really like the half moon because of the diagonal that is added to the image. Very well done!

Great idea of Dave's to post a master thread!

Interesting photo, never had the experience to do this type of photography but makes one wonder if a filter was needed to get the crisp shadows and nicely exposed moon.

How was the fall color? We don't get nearly the color other parts of the world see, but I believe the Bishop Creek drainage was popping about the time you were there.

No, John. No filter. Just a good steady tripod, an accurate meter reading and a cable release

I went up to North Lake and it was very beautiful. But then I went on the South Lake fork and that blew my mind. Scotland has beautiful autumn/fall colours, but I have never seen anything like that. It was the one time that emotion burst through because I know how much Sheila, my late wife, would have loved it. It really was a sight to behold.

An impressive shot. I was particularly intrigued by the texture in the foreground.

    Donald,
I believe there are three strong factors for brilliant fall colours.
Tree species, warm sunny day and cool nights.
I think that many parts of Scotland may be missing one of the three.
