    Rainbow Chard

I am used to seeing chard that has a green stem and leaf. This rainbow chard, which has the red stem and "veins," is new to me. It is recently being provided by my local grocery store and I couldn't resist photographing it.

Please click to review at the largest size to examine the detail.

    Setup
The rainbow chard is attached to white presentation board by five tiny nails eliminated from view during post-processing. The presentation board is cut to roughly the same shape of the chard but smaller to prevent it from being seen. Three pieces of string also elimninated during post-processing attached to the presentation board and a boom hung the subject in mid air. The background is high quality black felt attached to a board placed on an easel. A medium continuous-light lamp on the right side and a small continuous-light lamp on the left side raked light across the leaf and stem to display the texture. Both lamps were also carefully positioned to light the white presentation board, which bounced back lighting onto parts of the leaf. A polarizer controlled most of the glare, the rest of which was eliminated during post-processing.

Interesting, Mike. As presented it looks like some artist's rendition of a tree.

Thanks, Dan! When I saw the chard in the grocery store, I was immediately reminded of the concept of the tree of life.

Oddly, that is the only variety I know.

I go away for 2 weeks and come back to find you photographing veggies! What a change that must be in lighting from glass. Or maybe not. What do I know? Except I know I like this. The colors and texture are really nice. The range of light and shadow and the black background are all appealing. Good job!

Yes, very different from lighting glass and almost always easier if for no other reason than I don't have to be concerned about unwanted reflections of the objects in my tiny makeshift studio.
