Escalator Montage

I've been a bit quiet for a while (I hear the cheers). We had decided to have a short break in the Kielder Forest (Northumberland). Apart from some walking, there is a population of Ospreys on the lake behind the dam and I was keen to try some BIF. On the second evening however, we were called home because the house had been burgled. Smashed window at the rear, smashed alarm and smashed key safe. We've lost quite a lot including Susan's car, not the least of which is that we have lost a lot of memories. So there has been much to sort out and not much time for photography but we are now getting there.

This one is to get back into some sort of activity. No rationale for the presentation, it just appealed to me. C&C very welcome.

I'm really sorry to hear about the break in, must be awful.
I hope they catch the perpetrator(s), but I suspect that statistics say that's unlikely.

The montage is interesting - not something I consider myself artistic enough to try, so always helpful to see what's possible.

I like the montage and so appreciate your effort in making it. I can appreciate the image but I am not sure I could ever reproduce that kind of effect.


I had an attempted break in not long ago but they ran when the alarm went off. The police nabbed them less than two blocks from the house. Their car was loaded with good from other burgled houses in the area. Quite a frightening experience though they can thanks their lucky stars the alarm went off, otherwise they would have come face to face with a very protective Doberman. It would not have been pretty.

Nice to see you back John but sorry to hear of your ordeal. A break in always seems to leave the victims feeling so violated. Hope it all works out well for you.

For me it's the violation more than having to replace items, the anxiety/concern over replacement comes later and sometimes you don't even want to. Nice montage.

Everything works in the montage exceptionally well -- the crisp lines, the diagonal, the color, the three-dimensional appearance and more.

Agreed with everyone about the unfortunate losses incurred during the burglery.

Apart from the rationale that at present everything must seem uphill, I really like this, as it is different. Did you have a reason for the angles utilised?

(PS thieving scum are everywhere unfortunately and it is unlikely anything personal, but that doesn't avoid the feeling of it being personal, especially when things are lost. Just don't get me started on the solution).

Chris you were lucky. The burglary was reported by friends looking after the house at 8pm. We arrived home at midnight and the police (part of the local "Fast Response Team" ) finally attended at 2am the next morning - such is the effect of public funding cuts in the UK at the moment.

Interesting comment John. Sue and I have had the same conversation. You may replace the items that you value but they are never going to be the items you have lost. It's the loss of sentiment that you feel most.

Ian, if I'm honest, I was waiting for my other half on the top floor above the escalator and when a lone blonde haired person in a red coat presents themselves, you have to press the shutter because there must be a picture in there somewhere. The rest was a case of it looking right in PP.

John - I add my feelings of anger and regret at the crime you have suffered. Although we live in a low crime area and neighbours all look out for each other, I know I take a risk every time I leave the house to go away for a night or more.

Your response in the form of this picture is, however, excellent. Just the way such an image should be - good, sharp, clear lines. Bold shapes. Contrasting but harmonious tones. I like it very much.

Strangely Donald, we were saddened rather than angry. In, everything on the floor so that they could pick it up with gloved hands and then out. The place was ransacked but thankfully, there was no gratuitous damage other than to the alarm system and window. Low life they might have been but they were clearly professional. It's a shame that they don't apply their abilities in a different walk of life.
