From the same area but this time some sun bathers have come out to relax in the beautiful weather.

    Hi Joe,

A good shot to start the new quarter.

Nice scene; I particularly like the 'shared use' - sunbathing humans and gulls in their respective groups.

The only thing I wonder about is whether we need all the foreground water, playing about with LyteBox here leads me to suggest a crop across the bottom to just exclude the bright stones on the beach.

    All the best, Dave

Nice shot, Joe. I'm wondering what it might look like if you cropped in from the bottom, and possibly the side, and tried to bring some detail out of the clouds.

Edit: I see I am in good company as regards the crop.

Hi Dave. Welcome back. Yes a crop at the bottom is certainly doable. Are the bright rocks the ones forming the necklace about 1/3 the way up?😬! I was thinking about maybe about halfway up the shadow at the bottom right.

Here is my take on it:

Yes. Dave also suggested that. I will look at it later when I am on my computer . Thanks Janis.

A crop would also move the horizon further away from the middle

I was about to mention the gulls station at the left side but Dave beat me to it. You should had taken a shot of the bikini belle too, that area would have been nice. Anyway, I like this scene, nothing wanting in the environment. That sun can be very hot...beautiful but not for me. I already have the perfect olive tan many wanted 365.5 days a year.

Joe, I like this shot a lot and do not think it should be cropped. The beach on the right provides context and perspective as well a a good leading line to the main focal points from the bottom right. The horizon is in the middle but I think this suits the scene very well as the clouds and sky are looking good. If anything, I think you could liven the picture and bring out some more contrasts in light and colour by tweeking the black point and white points on the histogram just a little.

    Fly By:

All my recent shots have been with my recently acquired 24mm lens. I took Dave's advice and not worried about checking the lens for sharpness and focus, and decided to just enjoy it. One of its advantages is its size/weight. As I have been nursing a strained wrist, it has been a boon to walk around with this lens mounted and not aggravate my wrist.
Recently however I have been trying to use my 250mm zoom lens to create compression. ( Janis please note). I am not sure where to set my focal plane to get both items in my compression in reasonable focus, or should I get the foreground sharp and not worry about the far object? In this shot I was trying to get the flag with the trees in the foreground. The flag was about 700 to 800m away and the trees and geese less than 100m. As I was about to shoot the geese flew into my frame so a took the shot.

Your layers are limited so no need to get all in focus, however the foreground limbs are distracting so I would reconsider the composition. For this particular shot I would simply try to fill the frame with the main subject and crop out the extras.

I think it is a pretty cool shot -- very good timing with the Canadian flag and the Canadian geese...I love it. Now the the corrections...
