This engine isn't actually a great deal older than me! By an odd coincidence it spent most of its pre-preservation life based in the place I'm going to tomorrow.

Nicely captured, Dave. The perspective you chose for composition really works. Great detail on the engine and the train looks really long. Could be three cars or three hundred. And you did a great job of avoiding distracting items or anything that suggests modern day. IMO the B/W version is the only way to go on this one.

I was quite lucky really, it wasn't exactly a very thought-out shot. The train arrived a bit late, stopped for about 30 seconds (I didn't know where exactly it would pull up and having my bike minus lock I couldn't venture far) and then left. I cropped out the other photographers hanging over the fence on the right and "steamed out" most of the chap with camera phone on the left of the engine. I think the train had 6 carriages. (I do like the "period look" of the monochrome, though I also miss the nice red front end).

I like this image but cannot decide which I like: color or B&W.

The B&W seems vintage while I love the contrast in the color version between the black of the locomotive, the red trim and the smoke!

Let's just call it a draw between the two

Hi Dave I completely agree with Richard. It is such a nice image that I can't choose between the two for the reasons that Richard has already mentioned.
