there are many ways to do a shot. Would you consider a less bright bg?
Jim, on my monitor this image looks well balanced. It is bright, but as far as I can tell the whites are not blown.
In the light-box I can see a myriad of very bright 'sparkles'. I can't tell if they are part of the petal texture or maybe dew? I think that darkening overall would reduce the visible yellow and green detail in the centre of the bloom..But Brian's suggestion to darken the background (only) would certainly make the flower pop!
Beautiful capture!
I saw the same as you did, James --nicely exposed...Very nice, Jim...
Anyway, is this focus stacked?
Nicely composed.
Thanks John, Izzie, James and Brian for the feedback on the image.
I also thought it maybe was a little too bright. Been getting comments about images being underexposed lately and maybe went over the top with this one.
James the sparkles are from small amounts of water droplets fired by the sun.
Brian, good idea darkening the background a little. It was a very bright scene.
Agreed with all of the above comments. Consider adding a very subtle vignette.
Jim,
On my setup (calibrated) the exposure balance background to foreground is acceptable. It does not have tremendous separation, and adding some might enhance the image. I do like the suggestion of a tasteful vignette.
The shot is technically excellent with good sharpness, shading gradients, and framing. A great example of a still life.
I was thinking, this flower has a lot of height to it which we are not aware of because of the perspective compression. The cone on top protrudes from the surface, some of the petals are turned downwards away from us. Perhaps a narrower DoF, perhaps a wider lens to exaggerate the perspective more, maybe skewing off-center a little bit. Giving this object some more depth along the camera axis could perhaps add something to the capture.
