    The screw

This is more of a snap than my usual postings, but I loved the view of this submarine screw displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. The selective colour is just playful; I realise it will not be to everyone's taste but it's mainly about the light so I think it works.

Boy I'm just not sure playful is allowed in here, probably should check with the rules police. In the meantime, interesting processing, curiously I'm not finding it at all offensive. The more I look, the more I like.

It's an interesting image, Simon and appreciate the "playfulness". What I find a bit strange is the colour in the propeller. The colour suggests that we have a brass object here, but the colour doesn't look all that much like brass.

I'm having problems figuring out why that might be - I suspect it may be related to either the effect of de-colouration of the rest of the image (i.e. the colour is correct but my eyes / brain are being fooled by the B&W) or perhaps an after effect of the process you used to de-colour the image.

I increased the saturation on the screw a little (just a little!) to bring out the gold look, but it is brass and should look like it. It's an interesting observation though, about how are brains expect to see something.

Many thanks to everyone for the comments.

I really like it. Maybe it's my strange brain. Keep it up. Photography should be fun.

    Re: The screw

I should also add that I'm shooting so much more now I have a pocketable camera that takes pictures at (almost) the same quality of my DSLR. I wouldn't be without the Nikon at the moment, because I do such a variety of shooting (one of the perks of being an amateur is that I get to choose what I take pictures of) - for example, tomorrow night we have a model shoot at my camera club and I'll want the dslr for that. But I'm able to take many more pictures since I got the GX7. Prolific doesn't always mean high quality, but I'm working on improving my hit rate...

    Re: The screw

Simon - as someone who owns a D800 and the GX7, I am not surprised of what you are finding. I've had the GX7 for around 2 years now and I bought it primarily due to its size and weight. With the 14-140mm lens, it isn't exactly "pocketable", but then I was much more concerned about weight than size when I bought it.

I suspect you might notice it is a bit noisier than your D7100, as you get off the base ISO and you might notice that the focus is a bit slower, but those are probably the main things.

    Re: The screw

Yes, it's definitely noisier, and the noise is a little rough to look at whereas the Nikon noise has less colour errors so seems a bit more pleasant. The AF is fine as long as I am pointing at a stationary subject - then it's awesome.

Before I bought the d7100 I flirted with the idea of getting the GX7. Now I have both, I understand that they are different tools and both have their place in my camera kit. I've gone the route of primes rather than a superzoom, but that's because of the subjects I tend to shoot. The 20mm f1.7 is minuscule, and my other two lenses are very easily pocketable.

I especially like the angle from which you composed the shot. Great image!

Nice shot of a subject that could easily have been screwed up

It's amazing, the science and manufacturing care that goes into submarine screws to keep them quietly running and avoiding listening ears.

I like it anyway-- strange looking but nicer as you go back to it over and over again. This is my 4th look.
