There is a certain red powder that you scatter with the seeds to prevent the birds from eating them. Go to Lowes to find out as the last time I used it was when I was in Oz.

I just scatter more seed than they will eat.....they're happy, I'm happy....bonus....I get a shot of a pretty birdie
