Rack of Lamb -- Take 1

I have thought for a long time of photographing raw food in a context that it is not normally seen or at least not normally noticed. The image shown below is my start on that project along with my previous photos of a raw egg. The project which will surely last for a very long time because of its endless possibilities. Most important, just as my photos of wine allow me to combine that hobby with my photography hobby, I'm now also able to combine my cooking and photography hobbies.

    Setup
The background is black foam core. A medium continuous-light lamp backlights the subject. A second medium continuous-light lamp casts light into the middle of the scene through openings from above. A reflector positioned immediately above the camera slightly brightens the foreground on the left and right sides. A polarizer minimized glare.

Nice concept, easily recognizable as raw meat; yet having a structural quality.

That's very helpful to know, John. Thanks for mentioning it. I made about 15 compositions and kept three of them. Though the two not shown here are nice, their perspective is not as unusual as the perspective in this one. I was concerned that I might need to display one of the other photos to provide the context of this photo, but apparently not if everyone agrees with you about that.

That's different. Really like how you worked the light in this one and I like the POV.

Phase 2 of this project will show the lamb after it has been cooked. Mike? Perhaps a touch of mint sauce on the side?

Very 'architectural' in nature to me, really like the concept, looking forward to more.

I bet this would be awesome in black and white. More of an abstract.

Does the finished product disappear too quickly for photography? Great lighting and composition!

Mike I whole hearty agree with Manfred about Phase 2, Cooked, also look forward to Phase 3 the Aftermath of course it will also contain the wine that went along with the lamb.

Re: Rack of Lamb -- Take 1

    Thank you, everyone!

I really like Greg's idea that the image is "the temple of the carnivore." Once I add the image to my website (I will make more photos of food before I do that), I will surely use that caption and will not give him any credit .

The title of the thread apparently misled people into thinking that Take 2 might be a cooked version. Apologies about that! I'll still be photographing raw food for a while, probably a long while, before I get into photographing cooked food. No hints about what Take 2 of rack of lamb might be other than it will definitely be raw meat!

Interesting shooting angle. I agree with Marie about the B&W conversion but it may not be your goal for this project

Not my favorite among your work, Mike. Innovative but not my cut of meat

    Dear Mike,

A play on words, my friend, but this started as a very "raw" image - literally and figuratively.

Thanks to everyone including the three of you who made the very funny plays on words!
