Even though it is darkist outside, find a window with the light shining on it -- or a door. Get a glass object, e.g., glass of water on a bowl, a wine bottle ... anything that will reflect the light from the outside. Attach your lens to your camera, forget about the hood at this time, put the CP on top of the lens and turn it around until you can see how the reflection either disappears or lessen. It is the same idea when you park your car outside the garage, there will be light shining on the windows. Work that polarizer and you will understand on your own accord how it works.

In my film days I had a circular polarizer made by Vivitar with a small handle that one could turn it with, eliminating the chance of fingerprints on the lens.
