    Death Defying

    Day 31: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

Every afternoon it seems like the whole population of Cairns goes down to the Esplanade (called "The Nard" locally) to walk, exercise, play games or just lie under a tree and read. A few more foolhardy folk try to kill themselves or inflict serious by, for example, riding push-bikes down a vertical concrete wall. Not a great photo, I am afraid. I was keen to get a picture for the last day and only had my pocket Olympus 770, but given that it was dusk and the light was poor and I had no idea what I was shooting the result was passable (I think)

A big thank-you, Colin, for the original idea, the setup, and for starting the threads each day. A great concept, and it ran smooooothly.

    Cheers,

    Marvelous, Simply Marvelous!

    Day 31: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

Canon 500D, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. Lighting -1 EC, 580EX at +1.5 FEC, full EXIF, PAD slideshow.

I put a new kind of seed in the feeder, and the Tufted Titmouse said he/she likes it.

The higher power flash is doing better lighting on the bird, I think: showing good detail. The image is kind of noisy for ISO 100: it may be due to camera temperature from running live view. EXIF showed camera temp as 65C. No warnings, but that would be enough to increase thermal noise. I think it must have moved its lower mandible, too, as it's a little fuzzy.

    C&C are always welcome.

    Cheers,
    Rick

Nice shot Rick, I think you're right about the beak.

I think I'd have been tempted to clone out the bright spot adjacent to the head and 'Neat Image' the noise.

But I do like the composition; bird, feeder, background, bokeh, (and title), etc.

    Cheers,

I did run Neat Image, but probably should have pushed up the sliders a bit. I missed the bright spot entirely, thanks! I believe it's a bit of seed that he/she threw over his/her shoulder.

    Day 31: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

We are looking after a friend's place while he has a week in Brisbane and animals come with the deal. A young male golden lab, a normal ginger moggy and this hard case Persian. I don't know what it is about these flat faces, but they always look so p&*^%$d off at the world. Actually quite a nice cat.

Yesterday you had a little bit of S&M from Colin (well, not actually), so today a little bit of oral sex from me (well, not actually). This is a family web-site.

    OK, that's me banned...

Wow, great shot Rick. You guys are such perfectionists. I would be every so pleased with a shot like this. fuzzy mandible and noise be darned.
Nice work and great way to finish the exercise. I really liked reading your comments all through this too. It's very helpful to hear how others view the shots and great of you to take the time.

LOL, I think you 2 are getting a bit punchy. Great shots. It's 7am here Saturday morning. Thanks for the laughs to start my weekend off right

Hmm, apologies for the messed up quotes. I can't seem to get them sorted out.

You need an end bracket after the last cat shot.

That's better, I wanted your shot to be included in the post too, but couldn't get that to work either. Very funny though. what is your latest avatar. A hat, a lens cap, a ying/yang symbol.

It's a cup of tea shot from over-head. I then used a distortion tool (twirl, I think) to get the ying-yang shape. The text is Chinese for Ying-Yang. Would you rather I used the tooth-brushes?

LOL, no this is fine. I like the large version. You and Wirefox can take pictures of anything and eveything and make them work.

Thank you Colin for the idea.
It was hard on some days to get a shot. I forced myself as others have I think ...
Today, I tried something different on the trend of what I saw in Silvershotz.
Poor result so far. Just a start .

I didn't miss a day, but I think I was getting down low in the gutter today!

One more: Day 31: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

Rob, It isn't a gutter, it's the top corner of a bridge (as seen from underneath it), but actually it looks good 90 CW as a gutter, thank you for the tip!

    Re: Death Defying

Hi, Grant - hey, it might even have been better with more blur: show the action more. Anyway, you made the point: you won't see me on top of that thing.

    Cheers,
    Rick
