    Engangered bird N.Z. Dotterel

Just noticed this little fellow that I photographed while taking shots at a golf competition a few moths ago. About 8 pairs of these endangered birds have decided to nest on a links golf course which offers more protection than the nearby beach where people often illegally walk their dogs. There are a couple of nests on the edge of fairways that have been declared as "ground under repair" and cordoned off.

N.Z. Dotterel on edge of golf course water hazard.

Nice shot, Paul. When we visited in 2008 I got a couple of captures of one of those guys and had no idea at the time that what it was. It was cool when I picked up a field guide and found out what it was. Your shot is far superior to what I managed. Nice techs and a nicely complimentary BG. Well done.

So does that mean you shot a birdie???

Great shot Paul. I hope the dogs keep their distance (as well as the walkers actually)

Thanks Ken - I have more luck photographing these than the South Island Robin. I suppose as you live there you have hundreds of Robin shots.

Thanks, I am looking forward to photographing some Aussie birds and playing some golf when I am over in a few months.

Dan thank you for the comment. For an endangered bird they are seen reasonably often on the beaches in my area. I am sure you managed to get some decent shots of them when you visited - if you did not you will just have to come back with your newest lens and camera.

WARNING When on the golf course upsetting a golfer is just about as dangerous (maybe even more) as upsetting a bear.

Thanks Trev. Dogs are not allowed on the golf course and luckily both the dotterels and the dogs seem to know that.
It is unusual for me to shoot a birdie but my ball does take an annoying interest in the water hazard.

Thank you Rita. I am a bit wary of the term "captured". They are protected and capturing one would get me a big fine.

Very nice shot, Dan...always admire your images. Like this very much. Looks so sad and fragile.

Great shot of a nice bird Paul,

WARNING When on the golf course upsetting a golfer is just about as dangerous (maybe even more) as upsetting a bear.
Yes, I recall Dan's description of how his group had to behave when the bear came close to eat fish; avoid eye and face contact, keep still, keep very quiet, look big - but not threatening.

.. and I suspect some golfers can be quite big themselves
Although not matching the weight of Dan's Alaskan Brown bears, the driver or putter allows them to have a surprising reach if they make a swing at an errant photographer.

I imagine the ultimate no-no is getting between the player and the flag, although getting between the player and his/her trolley of clubs is a bad idea, as would be plonking a spiked tripod in to the green!

    Well done, Dave

It is most reassuring that a moderator appreciates how dangerous these golfing creatures can be. Sometimes they have what they call caddies that are trained to grab your camera and destroy it....

Dave thank you for your comments.

P.S. I cannot recall a photograph taken in a library. Obviously Liberians are even more dangerous.
