    Cloud Spectacle, Pembrokeshire

    C and C welcome

I took this shot ages ago, but despite numerous attempts to process the raw file, I've never been totally happy with the result. But I really want to get it right, because I think it is probably the most interesting cloud scene I've shot. I have used the DLO function in DPP (not available when I shot it) for vignetting and the sky seems better now, but I'm not sure about the sea and land. I've cropped the foreground somewhat, because even improved by DLO, the Canon 17-85 was rather soft in the corners at 17mm.

It looks pretty good to me. That's a text book cumulus nimbus top. Very high cloud when that happens.

Nice formations captured, land and sky. Looks like a mushroom cloud.

Thanks, yes it was an early September day with some amazing clouds. Shortly before taking this the mushroom had been hidden behind the nearer cloud, moving from left (south-west) to right up the Irish Sea. I have another shot with the mushroom just appearing and also some great towering clouds over the land behind this viewpoint. I'll have another go at re-processing that one too.

I used to stay in a B and B looking out over this way, with a great view of an endless procession of amazing clouds driven along by the prevailing south-westerlies (when you could see beyond the end of the garden!)

Incidentally, later in the day I struggled frantically trying to get my boots down the legs of my Goretex overtrousers as a great squall approached. I think it rained for about a minute!

    Hi Matt,

It is on the coast path not far out of Porthgain, going towards Abereiddi (this area is an easy day trip for you, I suppose. Wish I lived nearer a decent coastline).

I would be very glad to have taken the image & indeed to visit the place, so it works for me.
Is this anywhere near the 'Pemberley' of Jane Austen P&P or is Pemberley ficticous?

    Thanks Kay.

Pemberley (sorry, I admit to never having read or viewed P&P, though I did have 'Emma' "inflicted" on me at school at age 15!) would appear to have been based on Chatsworth House, in the beautiful Peak District of Derbyshire. This is "nowhere near" this spot in Pembrokeshire, though I say this as a Brit. To an Australian or an American, they would probably be classed as "just down the road"! In terms of road miles, I live about 70 miles from Chatsworth and 250 miles from this area of Pembrokeshire.

The nearest towns to this spot in Pembrokeshire are the beautiful cathedral City of St David's (smaller than many UK villages) and the port town of Fishguard. The nearest "big" city is Swansea.

    Cheers,

    Dave

I love clouds very much and this one is just as beautiful. The mushroom cloud I have not seen so far but it will be interesting. I see your mushroom cloud as more of a bird feeder or bird bath form. You may not believe this but everyday I take my camera out in the deck and shoot a cloud or two each day making my camera a sort of an exercise to see if I can operate it with the pain on my chest. I am getting better at it too.

    Hi Izzie,

The bird bath cloud..... interesting new nomenclature! I could photograph clouds on most days of the year, but most of the time they would just be a layer of grey, unfortunately, flat grey overcast weather being the norm in my part of England.
