    Tawny Frogmouth Owl

I found these three tawny frogmouth owl's lurking under one of the bridges in Kings Park.
apparently, its very unusual to see three of them together (normally only two).
They were not in the least bit bothered by my presence and i managed to get very close indeed.

Let me know what you think.

As soon as I saw the title of your post I had to have a look. I have only seen them in aviaries but have always thought they looked a bit odd and almost cute.
Good photographs that tend to support my thoughts on these owls.

P.S. Interesting that you lurk under bridges but it would certainly raise a few question if you were not carrying a camera

I think you were incredibly lucky. I also think you know how to use your camera.

    Hi Rob,

Fascinating to see so many good shots and from so close.

The one on the left in the first four pictures definitely looks to be sunbathing

apparently, its very unusual to see three of them together (normally only two)
If I were to guess; might they be a couple (on right), plus an older chick (the sunbather)?
It looks slimmer than the one on the right, even in #4, although I appreciate looks can be deceptive; they can probably 'plump up' their feathers on demand.

With #5, I wondered whether you had a shot with the beak tip sharper that you could 'stack' with this one?
(give me an inch and I'll ask for a mile)
    Just a thought

    Cheers, Dave

A very interesting series of shots. Very bizarre looking creatures when at their most frog-like. I love the detail in the closest shots, eg wear on the beak.

Great set of images. The first is a particularly good with the eyes holding the centre ground.

Amazing how well camouflaged their feather coloring is relative to the tree bark.
Thanks for sharing, I'll have to ask my sister if she's ever seen any of them as she lives in your neck of the woods.

Hi Nandakumar, yes they are nocturnal. Normally you would see them in V shaped part of a tree asleep all day. Seems to be quite common to find them around 6ft off the ground.

I had never seen any of them in my life...as was said before, they are hard to see in the wilds...You did a very good job here. I certainly enjoyed looking at them...
