    Young Boy C&C Welcomed

I have been reworking some images from late fall the past few days. I still have a difficult time deciding when an image should be converted to B&W... this one seemed to be asking for conversion.

    ISO 3200; 1/100s; f5; 122m

    Young Boy C&C Welcomed

I agree with John. I wondered how a subtle vignette might look on this image and began looking at the image with some NIK software filters applied. I really like this: Silver Efex Pro 2, yellowed 2

    Young Boy C&C Welcomed

IMO it seems to give the young lad a bit more masculine look. What do you think?

A beautiful boy and a nice shot Kim IMO the hightlights on the pillow distracts a bit but I think they can be recovered with PP.

    Another nice shot Kim.

+1 to Binnur's comment about the bright area of the pillow. It does pull our eyes away from the subject and off the frame.

Hi Richard. I agree the treatment is more masculine as it has more texture than the original version. I think the preference would be a personal choice :-)

Ugh - the white wasn't bothering me, but now that you mention it... it bothers me. Thanks Binnur -- a great example of how I should have paid better attention to the background.

Was this more akin to a grab shot or a planned shot? As a grab shot to preserve a great memory, it works very well, much better than most grab shots. If it was planned, it works less well for me because of the bold fabric on the left side grabbing my attention.

I seem to remember that you usually don't like vignettes, yet you used a negative vignette. For me, a traditional vignette would work better in this situation. Just personal preference, of course.

Thanks for commenting Mike. This particular shot was a grab shot...BUT, I should have paid better attention to the BG.

Thanks for mentioning the treatment. I have been experimenting with different types of treatments so that's why it's different than my usual. Trying to determine my preferences better.

I lovely photo. Agree with Binnur and I would also crop a little off the bottom - it is a little too light in comparison to the darkness of the boy's forehead and so is drawing my eyes down when I want them to stay studying his face.
And something i always want to know is, did the subject like it ? For me, that always determines whether it is a good shot - the acid test maybe ?

I like the relaxed look of this boy...his eyes and even those freckles on top of his nose -- another +1 to John's comment, nice capture and conversion. I also like the mono of Richard...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Kaye. I was trying some new PP techniques, so some of the brightness you are seeing may have been added by me. Something I will be more careful of next time.

The child's mother loved this image, as it captures his personality and sweetness -- it's one that she is printing.

Lovely shot Kim, I love the way you've captured the eyes!
