    "Thank You"

Today (Wednesday, November 11) is Veterans Day in America. Celebrations take place all over the country honoring people who have served and are serving in the military. Last Saturday I photographed an event that included a tent also honoring the military. A long table covered with a sheet of paper made it possible for the 10,000 attendees to leave a note of thanks to the military. The sheet is then sent to the military but I never heard exactly where it is sent.

As I walked into the tent, this person was already making their note. The shot is not posed and I'm not sure the subject ever noticed that I took the photo. I was working so quickly that I didn't even realize that the subject's words were written in a different color than the surrounding notes, which helped them stand out, and I didn't realize the words being written until I got home and viewed the image on my computer.

Is this veterans day in connection with the armistice in the Great War, November 11th 1918?

We send the young off to die at the whim of old men...then discard them when they don't.

The legislation was initially passed in 1938 in honor of the veterans of the Great War (now also called World War I). Indeed, it designated that day as Armistice Day.

Legislation passed in 1954 (after World War II and the Korean War had taken place) renamed the day Veterans Day to honor veterans of all wars. Legislation passed in 1968 moved Veterans Day and three other legal holidays to a Monday, ensuring that a three-day weekend would be allowed. Many people were confused by the new date of Veterans Day perhaps because they remembered that it originally was associated so strongly with November 11, the end of the Great War. In fact, some states continued to celebrate Veterans Day on its original date rather than the revised date. New legislation was passed in 1975 that returned Veterans Day to its original date beginning in 1978, though all of the other legal holidays that had been moved to a Monday remained that way.

The flag in this image could be the flag of the U.K., Australia or New Zealand all of whose veterans are responsible for the freedom that the people of our nations enjoy and cherish...
    "Thank You"

Here are some of these vets. I photographed this family last year. Veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam respectively...
    "Thank You"

And here I am as one of the marshals of a previous Veterans Day Parade in San Diego, California...
    "Thank You"

The jeep was donated by a local dealership, driven across the USA, stopping to have it's log signed by past presidents of the USA and other persons of note and finally auctioned off in New York City on July Fourth. The proceeds went to the Wounded Warrior Foundation...

The text or the font? I totally agree with the font but, not the meaning in the text.

Of course, there are some nations whose veterans were not responsible for their freedom but, veterans of other nations were.

When the day comes that the first people drafted/enlisted/shipped out are the children of the politicians, then we'll see just how popular going to war will be. I served, voluntarily, as the Vietnam war came to an end. Vets were treated like ****, like pariahs, because it was such an 'unpopular' war. You got out, put it behind you and moved on.

Dog help the poor Vets who fight in a 'popular' war, because everybody loves them, everybody respects them....at least on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but otherwise they join the rest of the veterans, left to deal with whatever damage they incurred, physically or mentally.

As far as I'm concerned, everyone in Congress who approves sending troops to war should be appointed as Officers and be required to lead their people into battle. We'll either fight righteous wars, or no more wars, but if we chose the former then those that vote to go to war should have to go too. The most valuable lives are those of the young men and women who fight, the least valuable lives...are the ones that send them to do it.

To all the Vets who served.....
