    My Annual Pilgrimage

Each year at this time, I take a short trip to the University of Qld grounds to photograph the jacaranda trees in bloom. Some people tell me I need to get a life but what would they know.

This year when I arrived I was dismayed to discover that the University in it's wisdom has installed a large new set of bike racks in front of this lovely grove of trees. The damn cheek of them, it seems to be all about the students and their transport needs. Haven't they heard of buses

Anyway it's a case of "if you can't beat em join em". This is the best I could do.

As a 12 old living in Denmark I once removed over 30 tyre valves. I had a sore shoulder from re pumping later on. It was fun though. Just a thought he he!

These are nice pictures but I am somewhat ambivalent about jacarandas. For university students they are associated with end of year exams. For environmentalists they are considered a weed around Brisbane and we are encouraged to remove jacarandas that grow wild at our place.

Nevertheless, this area of the university does look good. The grounds have a tradition of being well kept and the area around the lake is protected from serious development because it is subject to flooding. I have seen that area completely covered by water.

Yes Tony it is a timely reminder for students that once they are in bloom, it is time to do some serious swatting. I wasn't aware of the "weed" status but I just love to look out over Brisbane from a hill at this time of year to see the splashes of purple all over the suburbs.

    Thanks for commenting.

I can just imagine... What cheek! When you do stuff like that, you should be a bit more careful so you do not get caught...but what do you know as a 12 year old at the time? AT that age, I was more bratty than anything...you know how a fish get caught? --- by the mouth -- and that is exactly the spot I get caught...

Anyway, back to topic...Dave, I like the way you had incorporate the bike racks and bikes with your shot in the first one. The second one is equally as nice but I love the first on best...very clever...

Nice image, Dave. The bike racks don't really bother me. The scene is what it is: an urban park, so to speak. It would be a problem if there were cars parked along the roadside.

Nice capture Dave, These photos bring back some memories as I spent 4 years there. As beautiful as they are, Jacarandas & I don't mix as I am allergic to their pollen (apparently many people are). I used to get swollen lips, itchy eyes and runny nose from just walking around the pond at this time of year & yes there were no bike racks. There used to be a gaggle of giant geese that would attack anyone who venture near this pond.

Thanks Dean. Sorry about that allergy, I would find that a real pain. I spent several years there as a student but that was such a long time ago that I can't remember much about the area around the lake at that time !

The first one is very nice, composition on the second one doesn't work for me.

I like the bike racks, they help add depth to the image - and the trees are beautiful, I've never seen them before.
