A few bucks (of the animal kind)

Another visit to the mountains above Glendalough in County Wicklow this time to photograph the colours of heather in their prime in bright sunlight. The heather was disappointing and the bright sunlight absent all day. But the compensation was a herd of young bucks which I followed for some time on high ground across wet bogland.

Very nice series. Surprised that the Bucks are traveling together.

    Great series Neville,

The first two probably win for pose, but I appreciate that is a little difficult to control

That said, they are all good, technically very good in fact.

If I was to be an absolute swine; I might suggest #2 needed the buck a little more to our left, given he's looking out of the right side of frame, but that is being really nit-picky - and I bet you already knew that but can't change it if sticking to a consistent square format for the series - so I'll apologise now for even mentioning it.

PS, I'm sure I wouldn't have got that close with 300mm and wild bucks.

Thanks guys. And especially thanks to Dave. I think your point about no. 2 is well made. In fact all of these were shot in 3 x 2 landscape and I had some doubts about squaring them. Although the square format 'fits' best it just doesn't sit right with me. Don't exactly know why but landscape orientation seems more natural. Perhaps it's a throwback to those old oil paintings of great stags in the highlands or maybe it's to do with showing more of the animals' environment. I'll re-visit the originals.
Ah, the agonies of striving for and never reaching perfection.

Thank you John, Martin and Izzie. The story continues on my separate thread 'A few bucks more'.
