Shot with a Sigma 105 Macro, handheld. Light was very poor, completely overcast.

Overcast sky gave you very vibrant colors, hopefully you were able to capture more; I know how fleeting these bees can be.

Shouldn't you have focused on the eye instead...then even if the body is not in focus well, then it would have been OK...your shutter speed should have been higher than 1/125 seeing these critters is constantly on the move...I have the same lens as you have and I like it very much...

Hi Izzie, yep I saw where I focused on the wrong area of the bee. He was pretty small, and with my old eyes it was difficult to focus on a more specific spot.

I also really love the Sigma 105 Macro!

Very colourful Carol. I agree - they are most difficult to capture. I've tried repeatedly and
have not succeeded to get a keeper as yet. You did well.

I suggest that you remove the lenshood and use the on-board flash when in poor light [ the hood on my lens casts a shadow ] Also AF should help rather than trying to be clever and manual focus ... a small centre spot on the body will be faster than a human and flash should have you working at a small aperture at this distance to give you more DoF.
I could be wrong but give it a try. Also the wheeze of staying back a bit and cropping in editing could help.
If you 'almost' get there editing can help as here I remember from way back [ better light and no flash and a bridge camera to help with DoF]
