Somewhere Else on the Yorkshire Moors

A different take on the North Yorkshire Moors and certainly different than that posted by John2 in his Storm Rising Thread.

We had been out for an early evening meal, followed by a little bit of photography on our journey home. As I was making some images of standing stones and trees, I spotted the potential in the sky for a little bit of colour once the sun started to go down. I literally had to chase this sky going up hill and down Dale, to reach a position that I hoped would give a reasonable view to complement the sky.

As always your thoughts, comments and C&C would be welcome.

Nicely captured and processed, I think the foreground competes too much with the sky however, a bit too much of warmth against brightness.

Bit of a heart breaker Peter. Beautiful, beautiful colour and it is a wrench to lose any of it but John is right IMHO. Cropping top or bottom (top for me) would have the added advantage of moving the horizon off the centre line.

I agree that having so much heather in the foreground tends to compete against the sky. But I wouldn't want to lose anything from the sides; so any crop will mean a different size ratio.

Now, that's what a colour image should be about.

I tend to agree with others re the battle between foreground and sky. What about a crop at the bottom to make it into either a 16:9 or 2:1 ratio (okay, they're pretty close to each other)?

However, that's one for the wall.

Just as an aside - that's not looking at the same view as this, is it?

Thanks Donald. Looking at your image I think it's the Blakey Ridge road heading down towards Castleton. If I'm correct then my image is off to the left of yours on the road which drops down from Ralph Cross to Westerdale and Kildale.

Donald now that I've looked at your image on a monitor rather than my phone my original thought on where your image was taken can't be right as I don't recognise the tree line. However it could be the Blakey Ridge road but... dropping down in to either Rosedale or Hutton-Le-Hole.

Thanks Dave, Geoff and John (x2) I have looked at the crop suggestions and will have to let the boss decide which version reaches the print stage.

A lovely photo, Peter. I would crop out some of the foreground and thereby lower the horizon a little. Also I would desaturate the colours a little. To me, the sky has a "heavy" feeling about it due intense colour.

Peter I have looked at this image a few times today.

I enjoy this image but think maybe just a little too much in the background and foreground and not enough in the middle to balance the image.

Just me.

I am with Martin -- it is a beautiful image but is this really the real colour of this? +1 to Martin's comment...

In addition to the crop suggestions, Martin and Izzie suggested desaturating the sky, I can understand why they would want to do so but... I think this is a good representation of the colours I saw on the evening.

Hi Peter This is one of the images that I don't want to lose anything in it although the colors are intense and it is a crowded scene. Yes there are a lot of elements in the frame but my eyes are having a very pleasing journey in the frame without getting out and I like the scene very much. If I had to choose I would prefer crop1 because those field of flowers really adds to the image.

I just want to say that the halo on the edges of the mountains needs fixing.

No, do not desaturate the sky...I am just agreeing with him about too much colour...if this is nearer to what you saw, then so be it! That was why I asked. That is more important than someone I encounter here lately who is always defensive about his shot and only want praises. Yet you adhere to what you saw and processed because it is what it was...and in a gentle manner too.

Peter I wouldn't try and give a preference. I've been in this situation myself and couldn't decide. You have three different images which are all different but all good.

Two completely different scenes from those crops.

The first has more apparent depth but the second one is far better for the sky. All in all, I would go for the sky and choose the second option.

Just one slight thing though. I do find those distant lights a bit distracting, even with them being so small, so I would clone them out.

Geoff, I'm confused, please help me overcome the confusion; wrt "those distant lights" where in the image are you referring to please?
