#1 is too busy in my eyes, Matthew...maybe a portrait crop where the bee is, then blur the two flowers top and bottom...and anything that can be seen...

#2 will benefit from a square crop here...

Matthew, when you look at your image while post processing, try to enlarge it then move it around your monitor to get the best crop. Here at CiC, you can click on the image, then move it around your monitor to take a look at a possible crop (if you are going to do it...) Just a suggestion...I call it "learning to see"...very soon you can translate that to your composition too when behind your camera on a planned shoot.

Hi Matthew, I would try different crops for #2 to make the sharp parts of the flowers and the bee stand out more. I would also try rotating the image search for any better compositions

If the flowers are the main subject and the bee just a prop, then emphasize where you want the viewers eyes to go. The crop suggestions are probably the easiest methods as you say "getting up close and personal". The second image works as is, the diagonal created by the stem helps move my eyes toward the bee, then there is a bit of a swirl created by the background.

I think the background has a lot to do with adding to close shots. The less distractions in the background the more the subject will stand out.
