The technique and illusion is very good. I don't think the title represents what we are viewing, something else but not rose petals.
I don’t think the image exactly horrible myself Chauncey, but…
IMO (and IMO ONLY) this image has long since left the representation of photography and entered the representation of CAD/CGI (computer assisted design/computer generated imagery).
In the last several months I have been looking into CGI and the effect it is and has been having on the photography world. And what effect it is going to have in the fairly near future. It is certainly an eye-opener! In fact, it could arguably be said that the future is already here. Especially if you are a still life/product/advertisement photographer.
I understand that this image is predicated on a photograph of a wisp of smoke. I also understand that any semblance of photorealism was long gone as soon as this concept entered post-production regardless of what the concept was predicated on. CGI is always based on shapes and polygons of some kind.
Believing that, and the fact that there is no photorealism present, I for one wouldn’t be able to make a fair comment one way or another in the context of a photographic forum.
I’m not saying that is a good thing, and I’m not saying it is a bad thing. I'm not even saying I don't like the image! The image is what it is. I just couldn’t, in all honesty, consider it a photograph or even close to photorealistic.
Terry, I cannot argue with anything that you have said as, with the exception that it started
as a photograph, any semblance to that photograph is long gone via PS CC.
To expect acceptance, within a photography website, is, in hindsight, to be expected. C'est la vie.
I do plan to try my hand at this type of photography, will very likely have questions if it proves difficult. It's something I'd be more likely to practice during the winter months, but as we've been getting a lot of rain lately...
Chauncey, I like your image and would love to read about your process before I comment further. Don't feel intimidated, Andy Worehole (rhetorical hyperbole and misspelling intended) had far less talent than you have exhibited in this image, and look at his success. Go figure!
