just honest: the frame is dominating the subject: too big, too ... whatsoever. The artificial look of "noise" adds to that.

the theory was to stack and merge five shots, end up with a deep deep shot and put it on a background that would enhance the colours of the flower. But it just never quite came together for me.

it is the ground beneath the flower somewhat modified.

I like the idea, a lot. I agree with Erwin, the frame overpowers the image. If it were me I would try the following:

1. Slim down the border, maybe to 1/10th of what it is now
2. Try a solid black background, the image may not stand out enough but from the upper left corner which is dark, I think it would. If not try a solid, or even gradient, that complements the color of the image.
3. Try to flip the image vertically, the perspective may be a bit better. I have tried to view this standing on my head, but have not been entirely successful.

Those are the things I would try. You did a good job on stacking, DOF is just fine.

The stacking was the beginning of the shot. The rest just didn't go as well.
