Montreal Old Port - Clock Tower Beach

Wandering around the Old Port area of Montreal, I was a bit taken by the artificial beach along side the St Lawrence River. The brilliant blue umbrellas and the harsh shadows seemed to say "take my picture", so I did.

Manfred, the shadows look like holes in the ground. Very nice photograph.

What an interestingly arty shot and I can see why it got your attention.
Are your editing skills up to removing the rack or stand on the left edge?

Of course I could Graham, but that would have left a large open area in the image, so I composed this way to add balance to the shot. Here's a quick and nasty edit of what I think you are suggesting, i.e. removed shower..

Very nice clear sharp shot on a clear day, Manfred. Maybe they put this artificial beach was created there to cover the background wall so it will not be too visible to someone looking and concentrate on the umbrellas than the wall. What are those rectangular vertical boxes at the background? Is the water good here? maybe not for swimming...hence the beach scene? just guessing....

That's well seen and captured Manfred. Plenty of impact as a pattern shot with complimentary colours. Had the other shower (upper right) been more prominent, the two would have added a bit of symmetry but as is, I quite like both versions with perhaps a slight preference for the original .

The "boxes" in the background are the docks to moor boats to. Small is a relative term; as these can be "large" boats. They are small when compared to the freighters or cruise ships that use the Port of Montreal.

Here's a better view of the "boxes".

The boats are just being put in the water and the place will look quite different in another couple of weeks. The "official" start of the boating and camping season is the Victoria Day weekend; i.e. 3rd weekend in May. And yes, Queen Victoria's Birthday (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) is an official holiday in Canada.

Hi Manfred I prefer the original as there is environment in the frame and the shower is a part of it. But IMO a shot with only umbrellas and their shadows would also be a very nice image.

Nice shot Manfred. Imagine what it would look like if they'd drag the beach to eliminate the foot prints.
