Yes nice crisp image. I think I might run over that rather noisy background with a light Blur Brush, or some selective noise reduction settings.

Nice sharp shot Dave. I like the way you have him positioned to the side but I wonder if you could crop a bit off the right hand side. Much of that area doesn't add a lot to the image.

+1 to David's comment...a little bit of crop at the RHS side will be advantageous.

Many thanks for the comments..... re the 'blur brushing' to reduce noise. Now that its mentioned I agree and will see if I can make some improvements on this to tidy up the image in this respect.

Re cropping the right hand side, I can see the point in this but didn't want to change the width height relationship of the frame size. This image is already cropped to remove a very distracting component on the LEFT of the animal. I wanted to keep him filling the frame top to bottom AND remove the element on the left. I agree that if he had been positioned slightly more to the right, ie same effect as cropping the right but retaining the top to bottom frame filling that I wanted, this would of benifited the shot in terms of composition and certainly would of met 'rule of thirds' ideas in a more pleasing way. Believe me I did try but moving around this animal even with a tele lens in my garden was never going to keep him happy and he legged it post haste. Obviously no photographic diva wanting to pose for me. Anyway I appreciate the comments on this image, I will try to get some more if he decides to sit still for long enough.

Nicely caught Dave. Catching the right pose is half the problem with wild life. You could crop a bit from the RHS but because he/she is looking that way, it works for me.

Hi Dave,

As I don't print, I have always been one to crop for composition with priority over maintaining any given aspect ratio.

I might break my convention if presenting a series of images together, for consistency, but other than that, it is 'anything goes'.

Is there a reason you didn't want to change it?

If I were cropping this from a larger image, I would also leave a bit more space above the ears and below the tail, while losing some from right as suggested, I accept the left edge is determined by whatever you had to remove.

I'm old and set in my ways..... and maybe I need to learn to experiment more ;-)

Back in the day I shot Fuji Velvia slide for projection, I processed it all myself and did the whole thing from pressing the shutter through dev and mounting up to projecting it in the darkened room,

Yes their are ways of cropping slides for projection but none of them strike a chord with me as viewing a sequence in the same format flows better if that format is uniform. So to answer your question it's just that.... personally.... I like that aspect ratio uniformity, It's a throwback that I really should address........ I also accept that I should change my 'seeing' to adapt to this digital age.

I've been here 2 days now and already Im learning..... expect a variety of ratio formats in my new work....
