    Hockney Up Front

Had a day out in Saltaire over in Yorkshire. There is an old woollen mill called Salts Mill that has been turned into an exhibition space and they were running an exhibition of Hockney prints. Thought the old stone buildings might produce some interesting subjects but when I asked if I could use the camera if I didn't photograph the exhibits, the answer was that I could photograph anything provided that I didn't use flash. Unusual for the UK.
Took quite a few shots. This one was using an 8mm fisheye, a lens that I am slowly getting to grips with. It's a manual lens and the Meta data recorded by the camera is total nonsense so I can't pass it on. As always, comments very welcome.

John I am not usually a fan of the fisheye but here it really highlights the works of art.

Looks great to me. The bright colours in the art work really lift it and I do like the fisheye's distortion.

John, this is beautiful as presented. Like Barbara I am not very fond of fisheye either but presented like this, it is hard not to like your interpretation. It is not garish either...One question though...is this wall sort of rounded too or is it naturally flat?

I have only recently become familiar with Hockney's work; I think this image does it justice. Very nice.

I would never have thought of using a fisheye in this kind of situation but it worked really well. Nice presentation!

    Re: Hockney Up Front

Thanks all for the comments. I'm not sure how I feel about Hockney's work but he is colourful which helps photographically.

Barbara/Izzie, the fish eye effect is a bit like extreme HDR. There is a temptation to use it "just because...." but occasionally it adds something. "Seeing" the right subject is the problem. I thought it might work here because of the number of horizontal and vertical lines and the symmetry of the comp. But truthfully, I never really know until I see the end result so it is a bit of a lottery.

I'm also not usually a fan of the fish-eye lenses, but this one really pops. I like everything about it.
