    Niagara (Summer)

Just got back from taking pictures of the ice around the falls in Niagara. While they're importing I figure it's about time I post some photos from my adventure there in the summer. I don't have to many ready to go but I took quite the trip along the river, starting at one side of the Whirlpool and ending up in Niagara Glen and the Butterfly Conservatory. It was a great day with perfect weather where I just wandered where I wanted and took as many shots as I wanted (without nagging tag-alongs to make me hurry!).

Butterfly - These were a challenge since it was too dark for my 55-250 so I threw on my 55 prime and most of them were too far or too close. (Not to mention I had to use a low f/stop since they move fast and I didn't want a high ISO)

    C&C welcome.

Flowers and butterfly very nice, city through trees not so much; too much framing.

    Re: Niagara (Summer)

Some good ideas here; but for me, #1 isn't working because there is just too much out of focus dark areas in the foreground. I wonder about having a different crop or a merge of two focus points so the foreground is also in focus; but somehow, I don't think that particular angle is going to work well, but there is certainly potential for the general view if you can avoid the out of focus bits and have a better sky.

#2 is another good idea which isn't quite there as far as I am concerned. The general principle of a good sharp foreground gradually fading into the distance is a sound idea but I find there is too much out of focus area which is overwhelming the intended subject.

The butterfly is fine although I would try to slightly tone down that bright spot in the background behind the wing trailing edge.

I have to agree about number 1. The framing is a tad distracting. Number 2 and 3 are really good though in my opinion.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I wasn't too sure about #1 myself. If I get back to that spot I might try for a better crop and make sure I get the buildings sharp.

Geoff, here's an update for the Butterfly. Hopefully the background is slightly less distracting.

Yes, that is a lot better.
