    Lens Purchasing Addiction

I think I'm cured, Nikon has a sale and there wasn't anything listed that I was compelled to purchase, although there were a few items listed that were on my wish list five years ago.

Please let me know how you do this. I think I have everything I want - need has nothing to do with it - and then I see it Something that I just have to have to produce better pictures. Unfortunately, this applies to cameras, too. B&H us always singing their siren song in my head.

Don't get me wrong, I've had my eye on the 105mm 2.8 macro lens for some time now, but as macro seems to move me only when I am experiencing cabin fever; I've got the urge to purchase a bit under control.

I hear you, luckily there were only a few offerings that had me salivating.

I have to control the urge to purchase a new camera also.

If you can afford it and it enhances your work , then what the heck go for it. What you no longer need or use unload these items , no reason to hoard unless you want to be featured on that show. ( only kidding )

The NIKON blurb didn't phase me at all... Of course, the reason is that I am a Canon guy! I have, now that you mention it, been fondly looking at the new Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS-ii lens to replace my 400mm f/5.6L and 300mm f/4L IS lenses!

Sigma already had their blurb so I guess it's a matter of time before Canon releases theirs.

    Re: Lens Purchasing Addiction

I have purchased each one of my lenses to fill a certain niche and to provide a capability which I did not have or which I did not have a lens that produced the quality that I wanted.

The only lens that I bought on a whim was the 40mm f/2.8 Pancake. I seldom use it and have relegated it to live on my old Canon 30D and carry that setup to dog rescue events in order to shoot the adopters with their new furever pals whom they adopted. BTW: I carry it in a padded Coleman lunch bag. Not too many people would want to rip off the ham sandwich and apple that are the contents of most lunch bags.

The setup is great for the adoption pictures. It produces very reasonable quality IQ and I don't have much invested in it. I bought the refurbished pancake on sale for a very-very low price, and my old 30D is not worth much on the used market. My rationale is that if someone rips off that outfit, it will not hurt me as much as if I lost my 7D and 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens...

I just don't look at new cameras or lenses to lessen the temptation.
This really doesn't work well though as when I see a great picture that I would like to be able to take and look at what they have used to take i - then I get very envious.

The rate at which cameras and lenses are coming out (not to mention computers/tablets) this equipment envy will never stop. So just try not to look . . . .

Each time I buy a another camera ( quite often ) I promise myself, that I will not buy another for some years....the promise is never keep........just bought one week ago the Fuji X-T1......but I went only to the camera store to buy a batteries, and bought the X-T1......now I have started to buy more lenses for the X-T1....and so it goes on and on........
But I will sell all my Olympus E-M5 gear now, because knowing myself, now that I have the X-T1, the Olympus will gather dust.......

As I said....I only wanted to buy another batteries........

    Griddi,

I feel for you, luckily I've only purchased one additional camera which requires interchangeable lenses, with that model (micro 4/3rds) I got the two kit lenses that came with the Olympus PEN EPL-1 and two additional lenses. I haven't felt the need to add any more lenses to that system; yet.

When ya have a variety of lenses, eventually you begin using but one or two for most of your work.

So true, while I have always liked my 18-55mm kit lens; I found myself using it less and less. So I placed one of my cpl filters on it and whenever I get that urge to capture some brilliant blue skies or tame a reflection I'll reach for the kit lens as my typical favorites aren't suited for the task.
