    Colored Ice Globes

    Hi Everyone,

So I saw someone on facebook a few years back do this and figured I'd give it a try with it being 5*F outside as of late. I used red, green and blue and only the red and green were fully iced when I opened them. Anyways, these could have come out better but I was scared the balloons would pop if I filled them with too much water. It's only food coloring and balloons to make these. Let me know what you think.

These are really cool! I might give this a try myself!

Why did you have to use food colouring? Aren't the colour on the balloons enough?

EDIT: BTW, I wouldn't of guessed what they were if you hadn't of said

I think you might be confused. I used orange balloons to make these but the color of the balloons doesn't get into the water. You have to put food coloring into the water and then once it freezes you cut the balloon off and you have perfectly clear frozen colored globes. Definitely worth trying. I might post some of the macros I'm currently taking of this.

Did ya ever notice the clarity of ice that sculptors use...it's a matter of using distilled water added to
the mold in really thin layers. Have no clue how it would be accomplished using balloons as molds.

    Ah right, now I understand

Thanks for clearing that up, I think I'll give this a go during the week.

Nice idea, Zak. I like the third one... the background makes it seem colder to me. The macros sound like a good idea, too.

What a good idea, I would like to try out something like this myself too, but where I live, we even have not frost, but like at present 41C-42C heat.....but wait, if I would fill up these balloons with water they may explode because of the heat ?

Very nice series, the last image is my favorite......

The last two images are the macros I added. I just filled the frame and took a picture. I guess I could take very close up pictures of the crystal areas within the globe but they don't look interesting up close like I originally had thought so I backed up to just show the whole globe.

Nice concept, but I find that the second pic (green alone) is the only one that does it for me.

When you were freezing these, I take it that you let the balloons lie on the floor of the freezer, thus taking on a flat bottom. Would it be possible to let the balloon hang free to give a better spherical shape?

If I cared enough I'm sure I could rig something up.

Not necessary John...take a look at what Graham and Dan did with the distortion tools in Photoshop...
    Lets do Happy Valentine Pictures
