    QE2 and Queen Mary

The other day I decided to go to Long Beach and try to get a picture of both these ships together since who knows when it will happen again.
Unfortunately the fog was still present from that morning and didn't afford a very good view of them.
I wish it had been as clear as those days when we can see Catalina island like we could reach out and touch it.
Well, be that as it may, here is the best of the shots with a little work in my photo program to crop, sharpen etc etc.
Always amazes me how the newer cruise ships make the QM look 'small'.

It was foggy indeed. But I see your motivation for making the attempt. Pretty cool opportunity to get past and present together.

What adapter do you use for using the Nikkor lenses on the Sony NEX? I'm really infatuated with the Sony for an APS-C sensor travel camera but can't bring myself to invest in another set of lenses.

I use Fotodiox adapters for all the different lenses I have. Nothing fancy or expensive about it, they work for me, at least I think they do. I don't really know anything different. I don't have any Sony lenses for this camera. I bought it used at Adorama on line.

Interesting picture. I think you could make the ships more visible by lightening up the shadows slider in your software.

There's not a lot you can do about the fog Alan other that wait for it to clear.

Yep, they are building them higher these days, relying on sophisticated ballast systems more and choosing their routes just so they can get more happy holidaymakers more crammed together

Oh well...at least you got something ... I'd be happy in any case.

Grahame, remember Noah the ark builder is a local reed/raft builder who lives near the sea; these kind of ships were built and planned by sin-gineers.

Yep. 'fraid that other one isn't the QE2. Looks a lot newer and not as graceful.

I've some photo's of the QE, without the number 2. That ship is black at the bottom. Searching for the QE2, she is black at the bottom too. This one isn't.

The QE2 is not actively sailing anymore. It is laid up in Dubai after two failed attempts to re-fit her into a motel. Like the QM pictured.

These two ships are not even the same company. However, they are sister companies. The QE2 and the QM were trans-Atlantic liners owned by Cunard. I say were because neither are in active service anymore.

Ship companies are recognizable by their stack and/or hull colors.
Cunard was known for its red and black stacks, or “funnels” and black hulls. The white ship pictured on the left is a cruise ship rather than a trans-Atlantic crosser and is of a much different design and would not hold up to the rigors of trans-Atlantic crossings.

The white ship pictured on the left is a Carnival cruiser as indicated by the distinct red, white, and blue whale tail stack. Carnival is a sister company with Cunard and actually acquired Cunard in the late ‘90’s.

Do you know why the new QE isn't named QE3?
The first 2 where build in Scotland, the last in Italy. But finished in Hamburg. From there she had for the first time passengers and went to Amsterdam.

I did not know that George.

And I'm not sure I am making the connection as to the "why".

I think you all are correct, the white one is just the QE, no 2 attached to it.
    Sorry 'bout that.

This is the QE from the same site. It's a different ship. Here it's making a turn in the harbour.

Correct Terry and there's a number of that same build design,

    Re: QE2 and Queen Mary

Well then maybe I just plain missed her. I see she is currently up in San Francisco so maybe it was only here for a day, and as usual, I was a day late and dollar short. DOH!

Sorry. Thought I was going to make some points here but I guess not. Oh well, try, try again.
