Fishing on the beach

This is a man selling fish on Bournemouth beach. How can this be improved please?

That's a nice image. I would try to reduce the glare or highlights of the sun while trying to slightly increase the shadowed part of the beach.

Nice composition, I had to download and apply shadow/highlight adjustment in order to see the Fresh Fish sign, perhaps it's just my monitor. Scene definitely has a good dynamic range, did you do any editing to adjust the shadows or highlights? I think a shadow adjustment would definitely help this image.

Only in fast stone, but I still think it looks a bit dark.

+1 to Geoff's comment. I thought too that it looks better expanded in lytebox. I also tried to move it around to see if any cropping would suit but it did not...so as John says maybe just tone down the bright sun.

Hi Louise,

In addition to the suggestions so far, if I were there, I might have tried* shooting this from a few steps to camera left, so the sun were not quite so near the right hand side (and a bit closer to the stall).

Bear with me if I don't make this clear enough; I think the composition would benefit from a tiny bit more space on left side and same amount on the right, but after including a bit of non-reflective sea on right.

Then I'd consider 'clone relocating' one or two of the gulls to achieve a better compositional balance of the various 'points of interest'. One of which; the ship on the horizon to left of sun glare, is already ideally placed.

However, I appreciate not everyone would be happy taking such liberties with an image.

I think you have a somewhat difficult frame here to get a really spot on exposure. Metering with a bright highlight like this just throws things for a loop sometimes. My first thought here is that I might have tried to back button focus the scene and locked in, then turn toward to the boat and half pressed for a more neutral light metering then reframed. I see what you're after and I like the composition, just caught the darks a little to dark and the highlights a little to blown.

What a strong contrast from the right which is so bright and to the left so dark as to lose some vital details.How did you meter this pic and what did you do PP? Some how I think there could have been done some adjustments to get a better outcome.
