    Magnetic Island

My Mum was visiting after the new year and I had promised her we would visit Magnetic Island (affectionately known as Maggie by the locals) while she was here. It is only a 30 minute ferry ride from Townsville. Though instead of doing a day-trip we decided to stay a couple of nights. These were some of my landscape photos from those few days. C&C always welcomed.

We were fortunate to get some gorgeous purples through pink and orange during first light each morning.

Not super keen on the colour tones in the first three but I do like all the images.
If I had to make a real choice it would be between #4 & #7.

Thanks Graham, I have to admit I struggled a bit with the colours in those dawns; they seemed like a gift at the time, but I wasn't so sure once I started working on them. But after playing with white balance I was happy with 2 and 3. It is only image 1 that I'm still not especially happy with. While it reflects the glow that was happening that morning, the magenta colour cast through the timber and the glow on the white timber rails looks odd to me. But correcting and bringing the white through leaves the sky green. I think the jetty colour issues may be compounded by the artificial lighting. In the end I left the white balance as shot.

Thanks John, thanks Mark. It is a lovely island and I'm spoilt to have it right on my doorstep. We were fortunate with the weather for this time of year too. There were early predictions of a cyclone that had us thinking our trip might be shortened, but the low moved away from the coast and didn't intensify.

I hope to head back in winter for some more night shooting in the remote bays. Unfortunately the core of the milky way is facing back to the lights of Townsville, but there will still be some lovely starry skies to the north-east that should work well from those vantage points.

Beautiful images. My favorite is #1; however, I would like to see the color more subtile on the first 3 images.

Excellent images! Gets me a little more interested in trying landscape. I think #2 is my favorite, though I like #1, and #5 as well. I think you got a variety of nice affects with the varying shutter speeds. Thanks for posting specs.

I would like to see #1 with the magenta tones in the wood/railing gone. Breathtaking sky, but the pink overflow to the pier takes away from it a bit.

Like the perspective in all though!

    Re: Magnetic Island

They are beautiful and well composed but perhaps a bit over saturated. Number 5 is my absolute favorite. The reflection of the cloud in wet sand a nice element.

There is something that strikes me as slightly odd in the color of almost all of them but the first just seems unnatural in the coloring of wood of the pier.

On 4 I would crop out some of the bottom removing some foreground sand to move the horizon a bit more below midpoint. The horizontal crop is near perfect.
