HDR Beach

For a change I decided to sling a DSLR over my shoulder this morning as the dog and I set off down the beach - I even took a tripod.

He wasn't impressed but it did allow me to keep things in one place and have a bit of a play:

First shot is an in-camera 8 shot multiple exposure DNG processed in Lightroom and Nik SEP 2.
Second is three exposures 2 under/on/2 over combined in Nik HDR Pro 2 then mono's in SEP 2.





Bit of a halo which I will sort on the full sized file when I get round to it :-)

Very nice couple of shots.
Using in camera multi exposure the way you have in the first one is something I've never considered but seeing this I certainly will have a go at it now.

Both nicely done. Without the surf visible the second one has no sense of scale until one examines it closely. At first glance it could be a shot from the southwestern USA.

Robin, can you please clarify...when you said you shot the first one multiple exposure of how many frames then merge it, is this just shooting it with the same aperture and shutter speed and ISO many times then merging the shots together? I have not done this but my camera has that feature...I'd like to be able to multiple exposure that way you did and see the result I can achieve with it. Thanks...

On the Pentax K30 (also my Nikon D300s) you set the number of exposures you want, set auto gain (so it does the math for you) activate it and press the shutter the required number of times. At the end you get a single (RAW) frame with all the images combined. If it has worked anything that is fixed in place will be sharp (good tripod and a release helps) and anything that is moving will have a mixture of blur and detail.

I've found it best to watch the waves (for beach scenes) and get a mixture of sizes waiting a little between each shot. For waterfalls it doesn't matter so just fire them off one after the other. If you want to blur clouds wait 30 seconds or more between each shot so there is significant movement between the first and last.

I'm going to look for that feature on my camera. I tried the bracketing feature last week, also at the beach, but have yet to do anything with the images - your treatment has inspired me - thanks.

Mine too...great inspiration. I tried to google multiple exposure but they are not the instructions that I want. Most of them only take one image and then superimpose another one on top. This is more like focus stacking but in a different way...Your image is very beautifully done, Robin...much thoughts into it.

beautiful tones and textures in bot. i wasn't sure what i was going to see with hdr in the title, but i was pleasantly surprised, well done!
