    Over the edge

I had some time to kill while my wife was at a medical appointment, so I headed over to Hog's Back Falls to see what photographic materal the winter storm had left me to work with.

These small tufts of grass on some rocks were covered in fresh snow and ice and were sitting right where the water tumbles over part of the falls. The rising mist can be seen in the very top left of the image.

You have a good eye for finding interesting photographic material Manfred.

I am surprised that the water in the upper right is so much different from the water in the lower left. Was that caused by overhead reflections or did you treat the two parts of the image differently?

I'd like to take credit, but I can't. It's due to the differing depth of the water that causes that; the deep blue is where the water is deep and the lighter colour is where the water is shallower.

The area is made up of rock shelves, so there are deeper areas and shallower areas.

holy crap, that looks freezing cold. good use of time, sure beats catching the flu or consumption from one of the decades old magazines in the doctor's office waiting room.

Cold it was -21°C / -6°F and very bright out too. The display on the camera was almost useless; I do want to check the histogram too make sure my exposure compensation is correct.

There was a group of 4 people who were obviously taking a photography course, shooting there too; they looked like they were freezing.

It's Canada, it's winter. And spring is coming... Just not for a few months yet.

I think you didn't have the convenient place to shoot from a lower angle, otherwise I'm sure you would I especially like the bushes and the cottonlike snow formations

I have the same thoughts as Frank when I first saw this shot...very interesting find. I was also thinking little islands not rocks. What about the long shadow on the lower part of the shot, is that part of the viewing area, a rail or something??

There is no place to get lower to get a shot. The river / falls are quite wide and the only place to stand for a decent view is the bridge across the river, which you can see at the back of this image. The banks are quite steep and fenced off to prevent access.

It's the rail of the bridge. I have another shot showing two other photographers whose shadow can be seen on the "islands" of snow.

This fall shot from a few years ago shows the rocks and the tufts of grasses. This picture was taken from the same birdge, albeit from a different location on the bridge.

    Over the edge

Here is a shot of a different outcrop of snow; you can clearly see the shadow of the bridge deck, two figures standing there and the railing. I thought the effect of a hand-like shadow sneaking up and about to poke the shadow on the left might be interesting. I was shooting at just after 11:00AM, so the shadows were quite harsh.

Wonderful image. I especially like the diagonal composition that holds everything together.

I might have aimed for more of the fog at the edge of the falls, still...a great shot!

    Like this?

    Over the edge

I worked the shot, but was limited in how I could do so, as the only access to the area is via a footbridge. I found this version to be a bit unbalanced due to the negative space caused by the spray from the falls.

Agreed. The negative space is just negative; it doesn't enhance the composition.

Well they were all worth the time and trouble. Looks like an interesting little location in various conditions.

The title, 'Over the Edge', makes a lot more sense with this image than the original as you really can't tell that there is an edge in the original! The evidence of the 'edge' makes all the difference. Perhaps a crop somewhere between the two would work?

As they stand, I like this one better than the first but both are good, each in their own way.

What's in a title...in this case it conjures up expectations of seeing a edge/drop-off.
My recent " Menage a trois " of three orchids...on other sites evoked disappointment as to the content.

One can only conclude, from the title, that folks were expecting something of a risqué nature.

I like that 2nd shot, Manfred. Flowing water on one side and icicles (or whatever you guys call them) on the other.

I really don't get too hung up on titles or what other people think of them; I usually just call it whatever pops into my mind when I post the image. It's your own work and you have more insight into the image than anyone else does.
