    idaho schoolhouse

an old abandoned schoolhouse in idaho. taken a few years ago while on vacation. i went with a low angle to hide the road behind the school which was on a small hill. i crossed the mountains to spend the rest of the week at grand teton national park, but as it turns out those clouds were storm clouds. it rained for a few days, then snowed. while the valley was clear from the fog, the tetons were covered in a fog so thick that you couldn't even imagine where they might be hiding. luckily, the moose and other wildlife were out in full force that trip.

Cool shot. All the elements go well together. It seems like a strange place for a school house that with no other civilization around. (Granted I can not see all the surroundings)

Beautiful image in so many ways, Beth! The only way to improve upon it wold have been to capture it in early morning or late afternoon light, which I understand may not have been practical in your situation.

Though it would be understandable for many to think that description is a bit of an exaggeration, I can confirm that I had the same experience.

thanks, i could see where there were some surrounding farms, which i'm sure utilized the school, but i imagine that when this schoolhouse was in use it was situated halfway between what were 2 very small towns that would have been a few miles, but still considered walking distance for those kids. these towns have grown up enough that they now have a large enough population to have their own schools. i also image it was routine for the children to bring guns to school to protect themselves during this walk, kind odd when you think about how much times have changed.

Beth, I can hear the little girl with the pigtails squealing due to having one of them dunked in the inkwell. Seriously it evokes such a feeling of nostalgia. It is a beautiful capture. I especially like the cloud looming over the structure.

The notions you have about this building's history fit the image perfectly. I started laughing when I came to the part about the guns - yes things are rather different now. And yeah, that's probably why schools and churches seem to sometimes have been located away from other civilization.

it could very well be leaning to the right. or maybe just one of the walls is leaning. it is fairly windy there and it is a very old building. there used to be a chimney firmly attached a few years ago, by the time i visited the tin structure was hanging by a thread.

it is absolutely amazing when you think about how a landmass that large can hid behind tiny little airborne water droplets. i swear aliens must be involved.

Very evocative. I like the way you have captured the organic nature of the sense of place and time.
