2015 Project 52, firstquarter by Carolyn (Bunty Plumchip)

2015 Project 52 - Guidelines, FAQ and Index

I had a go at this a couple of years ago as a beginner to photography. I am still a beginner, but I think I have learned a little bit more now, and hope to learn a lot more over the next year. I use a Nikon D70S with standard 28-105mm Nikkor lens , and just have basic PP programs. I mostly take pictures of the world around me, large and small.

#1 Is of the full moon rising from the horizon of the North Sea at the end of our lane. 4-1-2015. The sight was amazing, and the aim to capture the colours and magic of the moment. To the West behind me the sun was setting over the Humber Estuary, so there is water almost on three sides with flat fields, which accounts for the unique light we have here on the Spurn peninsula.

Very nice image Carolyn I love the colors and composition. IMO bottom left corner needs brightening a bit, it looks too dark .

Thanks Binnur- I agree with you about the darkness in the front. I need to lift that as under there is some interestingly toned and textured clay-mud which I think would add to the overall picture.

    An excellent beginning Carolyn!

I don't know if you shot other views from this location and this composition is very nice, but if you didn't, this is an excellent vantage point to work the scene. By work the scene I mean try different crops, viewpoints, exposures, etc.

Thanks Frank- I did shoot quite a few from this point over the last couple of days - to get a clear sky and a full moon at just the right time of day is quite rare. One of the difficulties is to tie in the interest of composition- the moon and sea is lovely but quite boring unless the sea is doing something dramatic, in which case it is probably cloudy and therefore no moon visible- but then that is part of the challenge to take what is there and turn it into something special I am excited to try to do that over the next weeks and months- as the location is literally a couple of hundred yards from my gate, there should be plenty of opportunity to explore it and try different techniques and angles etc. One day it may turn into a good historical document if nothing else, as this coastline is eroding at an average of 2 metres a year.

If you are looking West and if prevailing winds are East to West then look for a day when the storm clouds are still moving in and have formed a canopy overhead but haven't yet reached the horizon - and have the moon in the right position! Much easier to plan for a sunrise!

Where I am at I would need to travel several miles to gat a location where I could make use of a low enough horizon to benefit, and even then it's not an ocean view!

Love the color in this and hope you will show us a version with that lower left corner lifted a bit. Nicely done.

Your brightened foreground edit has introduced some false colour problems in the bottom left corner. I wonder about a crop from the bottom and having a narrower looking image instead?

    WEEK 2

These are a couple of shots of what used to be Godwin Battery at Kilnsea on the Spurn Peninsula East Riding of Yorkshire. Coastal erosion has meant that the garrison where JRR Tolkien was once stationed is now sprawled out on the beach and into the North Sea. The weather conditions were a little challenging, windy with sand blowing up and grey skies that merged with a steely sea. This area is never the same twice, so there may be more views as the project goes on.

If anyone is interested in the thing itself, I have more views of Godwin Battery on Flickr.
